Book Condition Guidelines
We use the following guidelines when evaluating the condition of books we buy and sell. Listings for individual books may include additional details about the condition of the book, including the presence/absence of dustjackets, access codes, or supplemental media.
New
A new, unread book in original publisher condition. The book shows no significant signs of use, handling, or wear.
Like New
A book that appears nearly new but may show very minor signs of handling or shelf wear. No significant defects are present. May have a remainder mark on the page edge.
Near Fine
An unused or barely used book with minor cosmetic defects.
Very Good
A well-maintained book showing light signs of use.
Possible characteristics include:
- Minor wear
- Small ownership markings, including stickers, ex librii, and stamps
- A few creased pages
- Reading text is usually clean but may have a very small amount of markup
- Binding may have some light creasing
The text remains clean and fully readable, and the binding is sound.
Good
A complete and serviceable copy showing moderate signs of use.
Possible characteristics include:
- Noticeable wear
- Minor stains or liquid exposure
- Limited highlighting, underlining, or notes in the text
- Binding may have visible creasing
- No loose pages
The book remains fully functional and suitable for reading or research.
Acceptable
A complete reading or reference copy with significant signs of use.
Possible characteristics include:
- Heavy wear
- Obvious stains and other signs of liquid exposure, but no mold or stuck pages
- Significant highlighting or notes
- Damaged binding/loose pages
The text remains substantially complete and usable.
Ex-Library Books
Former library books may contain stamps, labels, card pockets, call numbers, or other institutional markings. Unless otherwise noted, ex-library books are fully complete and readable.
Dust Jackets
When present, dust jackets are included and described as part of the book’s condition. Dust jackets may show wear independent of the book itself.
Additional Notes
Any significant defects, markings, repairs, missing components, or other notable features will be described in the individual listing whenever possible.
